SUBSTITUTION CARDS FOR TILES
A. The Use of Mah Jong Cards
If Mah Jong in a card format is used, rules of playing remain the same with the following exceptions.
1.After cards are shuffled, East distributes thirteen cards to each player including himself and puts the remaining
deck of cards facedown in the middle of the table. There is no wall building.
2. East begins by drawing one card followed by South, West and North in a counter-clockwise direction.
3. For kong, draw the card from the bottom of the deck.
4. Supplementary cards for plant or season cards are drawn from the bottom of the deck.
B. The Use of Poker or Bridge Cards
Poker or bridge cards may be used to substitute for Mah Jong tiles. Four identical packs of poker or bridge cards are needed. The four sets of cards may be used, for example, as follows:
| Spades 1 to 9 representing cracks | 36 cards |
| Hearts 1 to 9 representing bamboos | 36 cards |
| Diamonds l to 9 representing circles | 36 cards |
| Clubs 1 to 4 representing 4 winds | 16 cards |
| Club Jack, Queen and King representing 3 dragons | 12 cards |

Players may use the remaining cards for substituting season or plant tiles.
