Lucy Te-Chu Lee (李 德 竹)


Dr. Lee, born in Hu Nan, China, Oct. 11, 1935, came to U.S. in 1955. She received her BS in Chemistry, Mount Mercy Collage, Pittsburgh, 1959 and MLS and Ph.D. at University of Pittsburgh in 1964 and 1988 respectively. Her doctoral thesis deals with the effect of knowledge and attitudes of library directors and professional librarians toward library automation systems in academic and research libraries in Taiwan.

Dr. Lee is currently professor at the Graduate Institute of Library and Information Science, National Taiwan University (1985- ); consultant, Transmisison Books and MicroInformation Co., Ltd. (1995- ); and President, the Laws of Nature of the Cultural and Educational Foundation, Taipei (1999- ).

Dr. Lee held a variety of positions: Metallurgical Engineer, Metals Research Laboratory, Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh (1959-65); Science Cataloger, Carnegie Mellon University Library (1965-67); Division Sponsored Research Staff, Project INTREX (Information Transfer Experiments), Electronic Systems Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts (1967-71); Associate Professor, Department of Library and Media Science, Tamkang University, Tamsui, Taiwan ( 1976-78); Research Associate, Division Chief, Science and Technology Information Center, National Science Council, Taipei (1971-75); Director, Chair, Graduate Institute of Library and Information Science, National Taiwan University (1988-92); editor, The National Institute for Compilation and Translation (1989-95); member, Library Development Committee, Ministry of Education, Taipei (1989-96); and Committee Chair, National Bureau of Standards, Ministry of Economics Affairs, Taipei (1993- ).

A prolific writer, Dr. Lee has published over 60 articles and several books, including

Library automation and information science: a collection of essays, 1985; Xi wen ke xue wen xian zhai yao suo yiu (Western science and technology literature: abstracts and indexes), 1996; Tu shu guan xue ji zi xun ke xue ci hui (English-Chinese terminology of library and information science), 2nd edition, 1997; Zhong wen tu shu zi xun xue wen xian zhai yao zi liao ku shu mu (Chinese bibliography of library and information science), 2000; Zi xun ju ren: Vannevar Bush (The information giant: Vannevar Bush) (1890-1974), 2001; Zi xun ke xue yu tu shu guan xue zhuan ti lun ji (Special Topics on Information and Library Science Essays) ,1955-1997, 2000; Hai xia liang an tu shu zi xun xiang guan quo jia bian zhun zhi bi jiao yab jiu (The comparative study of the national standards on library and information science between China mainland and Taiwan), 2001; and English-Chinese terminology of library information science and important references, 2002.

She is also chief editor of Chinese library and information science abstracts, 1995- ; associate chief editor of Encyclopedic dictionary of library and information science, 3 vols., 1995; and on the editorial board of Library Quarterly.

Dr. Lee has received many awards and honors. She was President, Chinese Association for Library Information Education, Taiwan (1995-99); recipient, Research. Paper Awards, National Science Council (1986-87, 90, 92, 94, 96, 97, 98, 2000); Distinguished Contribution Award, Library Association of China (1993); and Distinguished Contribution Award, Ministry of Education (1991),Beta Phi Mu, Phi Tai Phi Scholastic Honor Society of America, and Taipei chapter chair of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (1989).
