Dr. Lu, born in China, received B.A. from Yenching University in 1935, M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1942 and 1951 respectively. Her doctoral theses deals with dominant, equalitarian, and submissive roles in marriage.

Dr. Lu served as social worker at the Department of Neuro-Psychiatry, Peking Union Medical College (1935-40), research associate, University of Chicago (1952), assistant professor, University of Utah (1952-54), and Supervising Sociologist and Director of Sociological Research on Schizophrenia, Manteno State Hospital, Illinois State Department of Mental Health (1956-68). From 1968 to 1988, she taught at the University of Chicago. Dr. Lu retired in 1989.
At the University of Chicago, she met and married to Dr. Tang Tsou, a renowned political scientist. An expert on mental health and schizophrenia in particular, Dr. Lu held seminars for third year medical students at the University of Chicago for social-psychological research in schizophrenia, published many articles in the field, and completed a book-length manuscript, "Schizophrenia and social seif." Dr. Lu also conducted a number of interviews, including the ones on with American schizophrenic patients, Chinese mental patients, and mental patients and psychiatric staff in general hospital as well as in mental hospital in China
