Dr. Yu-long Ling, born in China and educated in Taiwan with a law degree, came to the U.S. to pursue his graduate work at Indiana University, where he received his master of law and Ph.D. degrees in political science. Dr. Ling, professor of political science and at head of the Social Sciences Division Franklin College, has been a member of the faculty since 1972.
He has authored many articles published in professional journals. He also has published several books in both English and Chinese and written numerous articles on the reunification of China. He contributed an article to Sun Yat-Sen's Doctrine in the Modern World (ed. Chu-Yuan Cheng. Boulder, Colo.: Westview Press, 1989). The book was also published in Chinese version, Sun Zhongshan si xiang dang shijie (Taipei Ghi: Gao Li Bian Yi Guan, 1996). It is considered the most influential social science book in the last decade in the Republic of China.

After he went back to Taiwan to observe and collect data on the 2000 presidential election, his analysis of the election was published in the American Journal of Chinese Studies. He has written many columns for newspapers in Taiwan and the U.S. and is a regular columnist for the Daily Journal.
Dr. Ling is recognized as an expert on American foreign policy in Asia. He was invited to attend the Voice of America's programs and his interview by the Voice of American was broadcast throughout China.
He is active in many professional organizations. He is an executive board member for the American Association for Chinese Studies and the Chinese-American Society. He was the former president of the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Institute in North America. He was recently appointed book review editor for the Journal of the American Association for Chinese Studies.
Dr. Ling is the recipient of many awards, including a Ford Foundation Scholarship and a Senior Fulbright Fellowship. At Franklin, he received the Faculty Service Award and The Clifford and Paula Dietz Award for Faculty Excellence. He is the occupant of the Elmon and Lucile Williams Chair in Law and Public Service.
Dr. Ling and his wife, Yuriko, reside in Franklin. They have one son, Tony, who is a lawyer in the Chicago area.
